Activities

Cavangarden sits on the Wild Atlantic Way, with the best of Donegal a short drive in every direction.

There is plenty to fill a long weekend — or a full week — within easy reach of the house. The Atlantic coast, quiet river walks and one of Ireland's oldest towns are all close by. Here are a few of our favourites.

Explore the property

A path through the grounds at Cavangarden House

Take time to wander the grounds at Cavangarden, from quiet corners of the garden to old stone walls, mature trees and views across the Donegal countryside. It is a lovely place to stretch your legs before breakfast or settle into the peace of the house after a day out.

Surfing at Rossnowlagh

Surfers in the waves at Rossnowlagh Beach, Co. Donegal

Rossnowlagh Beach is a wide, gently shelving strand about fifteen minutes from the house — one of the best beginner surf spots on the north-west coast. Boards and lessons are available locally, and even if you stay on dry land it is a glorious place for a long walk.

Walks along the River Erne

Woodland stream flowing toward the River Erne near Cavangarden House

The grounds run down toward the River Erne, with walks in either direction straight from the gate. Woodland paths, riverbank trails and quiet country lanes — ideal for clearing your head before breakfast or winding down in the evening.

The cliffs of Slieve League

Slieve League sea cliffs rising above the Atlantic, Co. Donegal

The sea cliffs at Slieve League rise almost 600 metres straight out of the Atlantic, among the highest in Europe. They sit about an hour west along the coast, with a viewing point near the top and a longer walk for those who want it.

Exploring Ballyshannon

The Rory Gallagher statue in Ballyshannon town centre

Ballyshannon, just down the road, claims to be the oldest town in Ireland. It has a handful of good pubs, traditional music, and a proud connection to guitarist Rory Gallagher, whose statue stands in the town centre. The annual Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival brings fans and musicians to Ballyshannon each summer and is well worth planning a trip around.
